Yoga in Juneau, Alaska

with Suddha Weixler
September 22-27, 2009

Shielded by the calm waters of the Inside Passage, Juneau offers stunning vistas of Alaska's majestic mountains, rivers, glaciers, and forests. Surrounded by the Alexander Archipelago, a group of 10,000 islands snuggled up to the narrow strip of mainland and the Coast Mountains, the thriving town offers big-city amenities and small-town hospitality. Join us for six days of yoga, meditation, hiking, exploration and rejuvenation.

Southeast Alaska is a wonderfully unique part of the state, surrounded by extreme geography, diverse vegetation and abundant wildlife. Warm, wet air from the Pacific Ocean, blocked by the coastal mountains, creates a temperate rainforest climate. The magnificent Juneau Icefield feeds many of the area's glaciers.
A rich history steeped in Native culture and the race for gold paints a glimpse of life on the frontier. Due to the region's rich resources and food supply, Southeast Natives were able to develop a sophisticated social and cultural life, sharing common art, ceremonies and legends.

We will stay in a small hotel close to the Taproot Yoga Center. In addition to daily yoga and meditation, you may hike or hang out in town. The impressive Mendenhall Glacier is accessible and trails lead through forests to waterfalls and lakes. Enjoy sea kayaking, fishing and whale-watching. Some of the area fjords are relatively unknown and a visit in September ensures few tourists, peace and tranquility. Or simply relax in picturesque Juneau; visit its museums, market, shops and art galleries. We will practice morning and late afternoon, allowing time during the day for activities.

The cost of this trip is $980. This includes your double occupancy room with continental breakfast and all instruction. (Single occupancy rooms are available.) Airfare to and from Juneau, ground transportation and meals are not included. We will travel as a group or help participants to arrange air transportation. If you wish to come for a shorter period we will pro-rate the fee. Due to limited space, early registration is encouraged.

If you have any questions, please call Suddha at 773.327.3650 or 847.866.6812.

He spent eight years in a monastic environment learning the classical system. He was certified in 1984 and is the Director of the Chicago Yoga Center. Initiated into Raja Yoga and Meditation in 1982 by Swami Narayanananda, his training includes classical Hatha, the Iyengar method and study of Ashtanga Yoga with Pattabhi Jois in South India, annually from 1995 through 1998. He is a student of Srivatsa Ramaswami of Chennai, and has been introduced into the Vinyasa Krama method of Sri T. Krishnamacharya. Suddha has been an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1989, and enjoys the art of photography.

Suddha's teaching style is precise, attentive and integrating. Students will be working at their own capacity. The workshop will include morning sitting meditation practice. The morning asana class will be deep and therapeutic, blending the essential aspects of the Iyengar, Ashtanga and Viniyoga traditions, as well as Anusara and Yin Yoga. The afternoon practice will include creative and dynamic Vinyasa sequences. The emphasis is on the integration of all physical, mental, energetic and spiritual faculties.
