The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Chapters I and II

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali may be termed the Bible of Yoga. More and more serious students of yoga and teachers have taken to a detailed study of the Sutras. The first two chapters called the Samadhi and Sadhana padas bring out the goals and also the means of achieving the goals of yoga. In this ten hour program the thought process of raja yoga or yoga of enlightenment contained in the I and II chapters will be gone into in detail, term by term and sutra by sutra closely following the text.

Mantra Yoga has a direct bearing on the mind. By focusing on a chosen mantra, the mind, which is usually distracted, is trained to focus on one object for a considerable time. Since yoga is an ancient science, knowledge has traditionally been passed on from teacher to student individually or in small groups.

Sri Srivatsa Ramaswami had the great fortune and honor to study with Sri. T. Krishnamacharya for over 36 years. He has a strong theoretical background, studying in great depth classic texts in Sanskrit including, the Bhagawad Gita, Yoga Sutra, Hatha Yoga Pradeepika, Yogayoganavalkya, Yoga Upanishads and Vidyas, as well as Mantra Yoga.

Sri T. Krishnamacharya, who lived for 100 years, is recognized as the most significant influence imparting authentic knowledge in yoga in the last 50 years. Many of the best known yoga teachers of today have been his students, including B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and T.K.V. Desikachar.

Srivatsa Ramaswami was the longest standing student of Sri. T. Krishnamacharya outside of his immediate family. Since yoga is an art and a science, working closely with a master is highly beneficial. This relationship allowed Sri Ramaswami to develop the necessary unique skills and exceptional training to contribute significantly towards the teaching and research of yoga.
