Yoga in Italy
with Suddha Weixler
July 10 - 17, 2010

About 45 minutes from Rome, two hours from Siena is an area rich in sites of historic and natural beauty. Todi, Spoleto, Orvieto, Assisi are medieval towns and are within easy reach.

The property where we will be staying consists of two 17th century stone buildings on 7 acres of land with an outdoor swimming pool. The houses, both beautifully restored, are situated on a hill amidst undulating farmland and forests. Around the buildings are spacious terraces for meals and relaxation. From the houses and terraces there are stunning views of the extensive grounds, with hillside olive groves and fruit trees, spectacular evening sunsets, and a large field in the valley below.

The setting is calm and rustic, an ideal place to rest and unwind. A natural spring supplies the property with abundant fresh water and there is a stream at the bottom of the hill. There is also a small pond and kitchen gardens with a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs. The grounds are landscaped with natural, secluded areas for resting, reading and meditation. The houses and grounds are private and peaceful and the area is good for walking.

All the rooms have been recently designed in a simple natural style, a combination of modern and old. Vegetarian meals are prepared to suit our group, made up from seasonal specialties. There is an outside massage hut, where a range of treatments are offered at very reasonable rates.

Yoga classes will be taught by Suddha Weixler, including meditation, and talks on the history of yoga and its philosophy. Suddha began studying yoga in 1978 on his first visit to India. He spent eight years in a monastic environment learning the classical system. He was certified in 1984 and is the Director of the Chicago Yoga Center. Initiated into Raja Yoga and Meditation in 1982 by Swami Narayanananda, his training includes classical Hatha, the Iyengar method, Ashtanga Yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in South India and Vinyasa Krama of Sri T. Krishnamacharya as taught by Srivatsa Ramaswami. Suddha has been an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1989, and enjoys the art of photography.

We will use the inside yoga-room, or practice on a large covered outside yoga platform. This beautiful wooden structure with canopy, designed by an award-winning Italian architect, is situated amidst the olive groves overlooking a vast green plain and stream below. After morning yoga practice and breakfast, we may visit charming medieval towns, delight in local festivities in surrounding villages, or maybe just hang out and play in the swimming pool, read, and relax in the garden. Mountain bikes are free of charge. Other nearby activities include: tennis, canoeing, golf, and hot sulphur springs.

The cost of this trip is $1,340. This includes your accommodation, double occupancy, (single supplement is available), tea before practice, breakfast, lunch, dinner (Friday dinner off premise not included) and yoga instruction. Not included are tips and meals when we travel or sightsee, ground transportation and air fare. We will travel as a group or help participants arrange their own air transportation.

Suddha Weixler began studying yoga in 1978 on his first visit to India. He spent eight years in a monastic environment learning the classical system. He was certified in 1984 by the Narayanananda Universal Yoga Trust, Rishikesh, Himalayas, India, and is the Director of the Chicago Yoga Center. Initiated into Raja Yoga and Meditation in 1982 by Swami Narayanananda, his training includes classical Hatha, the Iyengar method and Ashtanga Yoga. He has studied in Mysore, India with K. Pattabhi Jois three times from 1995 to 1998. Suddha is still a patient student of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy and practice, in the lineage of the late Swami Narayanananda, his Guru and most influential teacher. Suddha in addition to running and teaching at a premier yoga school for over 20 years, also leads workshops, teacher training courses and retreats in the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Spain and Italy. He has been an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1989.

Suddha's teaching style is precise, attentive and integrating. He encourages students to work at their capacity. The workshop will include morning meditation practice; the morning class will be deep and therapeutic, blending the essential aspects of the Iyengar, Ashtanga and Viniyoga traditions, incorporating Anusara and Yin Yoga. The afternoon practice will be based on dynamic, invigorating Vinyasa (linking) sequences. The emphasis is on the integration of all physical, mental, energetic and spiritual faculties.
